History and Background

Our church, formerly called “Colby Drive Bible Chapel,” began in 1981 as an offshoot of Grace Chapel in Clayton Park, Halifax. At the time, Grace Chapel commissioned its members from Dartmouth to begin a church in their city, and Colby was born.

At Colby, we are a Protestant church with roots in the Christian Brethren movement. The Brethren movement, which began in England in the 1800s, has always invited members from various denominations to gather together to focus on the centrality of Jesus in everything. Our church currently consists of Christians from various denominations and backgrounds who want to grow as disciples of Jesus. We believe the key requirement for joining Jesus’ family is faith in Jesus Christ as our Saviour and as our Lord.

What holds the members of Colby together are:

  • A focus on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ
  • The core Gospel truths summarized in the Apostles’ Creed
  • A deep trust in the Bible as the Word of God and our authority for learning how to live under Jesus’ rule
  • A dependence on the Holy Spirit to guide us

Our motto at Colby is, “Inviting all to new life in Jesus” and this is the core of why we exist as a church! Ever since we began as a church we have sought to reflect Jesus and be a people who demonstrate His love, acceptance, and forgiveness for all who worship with us.

Our Distinctives:

We have also carried on two distinctive beliefs from our Brethren roots. First, we believe that all those attending our church have a role to play in our church in caring for one another and building one another up. So we look for ways to get everyone involved in the life of our church, exercising the gifts God has given them so we can bless one another.  Second, we regularly remember and celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus by observing communion every Sunday.

Our Structure:

Our church is governed by two groups of people – elders and deacons.

Our elders’ board is made up of men who are largely responsible for the spiritual care of our members (praying for the church and leading most of the teaching on Sundays). Our deacons board is made up of men and women who are primarily responsible for the physical aspects of running our church.

What You Will Find When You Come:

You will find a friendly, accepting, loving community that loves God and longs to know Jesus. We are laid back in many ways and our services use contemporary and liturgical worship forms to help us grow in Christ. Our goal is to bring the light of the good news of Jesus Christ to Colby Village and its surroundings.
