What to Expect During your Visit

To help you know what to expect we have some answers to common questions here.

Please note that we attempt to offer a scent-free building for those with sensitive allergies. Thank you for planning ahead!

What Should I Wear?

Most people dress to be comfortable – jeans and t-shirts, shorts, etc. are all perfectly fine. Feel free to come as you are.

When Should I Arrive?

We recommend arriving somewhere between 10:00 and 10:15 for a 10:30 am start.

Where Can I Park?

There is plenty of on-site parking at the side and back of the building with marked spots for both seniors and people with disabilities.

What Is The Building Like?

The church building has two levels. A main door at the front of the building leads to the upper level where services take place. A back door leads to the downstairs with a staircase between levels. There are cloakroom areas and bathrooms on both levels.

What Happens Before A Service?

Our people are a friendly bunch so expect to be welcomed by someone when you arrive. We serve coffee, tea and snacks downstairs beginning at 10:00 am. People gather downstairs or upstairs to chat prior to the service. You are also welcome to bring coffee or tea into the service when it begins.

What Happens During A Service?

We generally begin services by singing a few songs to God – usually contemporary in style and we sometimes have a small band to lead us. As with everything we do, you are welcome to join us in singing but it’s certainly not mandatory. After the songs, we will have a time of prayer together as a church. Everyone is welcome to participate and to suggest items for prayer. Following the prayer, we have a time of teaching directly from the Bible. Past teachings are available to listen or download in our Teachings area. Every Sunday we will participate in a Communion meal where bread and grape juice are served (gluten-free bread is available). In total, services usually run for about an hour and a half.

What If I Have Children?

We have a Nursery area with volunteers that can provide care for infants. We also have a Sunday School program with a number of classes for children of different age ranges. All teachers and volunteers maintain full criminal background and vulnerable sector checks. While we are happy to offer full supervision for your children, you are also welcome to stay with them or check in on them whenever you wish.

Do You Use A Specific Bible Version?

For consistency reasons we usually read and teach from the New International Version (NIV). However, we endorse many different translations as accurate and reliable in their rendering of scripture.

Should I Donate Money?

At certain times (for example, when we celebrate Communion together) we invite members to leave a financial offering. However, this is entirely optional and left up to each individual. If you are a visitor, please feel free to be our guest and do not donate.

How Can I Find Out More?

If you have questions we didn’t answer here, feel free to email questions@colbychurch.ca. We would love to hear from you!

What we Believe about:
God

We believe God has revealed Himself as the one true God, Almighty Father, Creator and Ruler of the universe. He lives eternally as a relationship of love – a trinity of distinct, co-equal persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God is uniquely worthy of our worship, confidence and obedience.

Gen 1:1 | Ps 90:2 | John 1:1-3 | Job 42:1-2 | 2 Cor 13:14

Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus Christ, eternally the second person of the Trinity, is both completely God and completely human. He was born of the Virgin Mary, lived a sinless human life and performed many miracles. He willingly took upon himself all of our sins and offers humanity reconciliation to God through His death in our place. He rose physically from the dead and ascended to His Father in heaven where He remains our advocate and mediator. We look forward to His imminent return to earth as King to bring his consummated kingdom of perfect peace and righteousness and joy.

Col 1:15-20 | John 1:1; 14 | Heb 1:1-3 | Phil 2:5-11 | Matt 1:18-25 | Eph 1:3-10 | 1 Cor 15:3-5 | 2 Cor 5:21 | Rev 22:12

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, was given at Pentecost to unify all believers in the Lord Jesus into one body, His universal church. The Holy Spirit is God’s personal, indwelling presence within each believing heart and the guarantee of our salvation. He guides, gifts and empowers the Christian to live a Godly life of worship, service and witness to Jesus, serving His church and reaching out to a lost world.

John 7:37-39 | John 14:15-17 | John 16:7-15 | Acts 1:8 | Eph 1:13-14 | 2 Cor 5:5 | 1 Cor 12:4-6

Humanity

We believe every human being is a valuable person created by God in His image and thus deserving of dignity and respect. Although every person has tremendous potential for good, all are marred through disobedience toward God, called sin. Sin causes many problems in life and separates people from God. Being lost and alienated, we are incapable of attaining reconciliation to God through our own effort or merit.

Gen 1:26-27 | Ps 8:3-6 | Ecc 7:29 | Rom 3:23 | Rom 5:12 | Eph 2:1-3

Salvation

We believe that God, as an act of unmerited, unearned grace and kindness, freely offers salvation to all who will receive it. This salvation to eternal life is an instantaneous and permanent transformation that includes unconditional forgiveness of sins – past, present and future, the gift of God’s indwelling Holy Spirit and reconciliation of our personal relationship with God. We receive this gift only through individual repentance, faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and his atoning death and resurrection.

John 3:16 | John 3:36 | John 5:24 | John 14:6 | John 17:3 | Rom 3:28 | Heb 10:14 | Rom 5:1 | Rom 8:31-39 | 1 Cor 15:1-8 | 2 Cor 5:17-20 | Titus 3:3-10

Church

We believe God has unified all who trust in Jesus Christ, regardless of age or circumstance, into one universal, spiritual family – the body of Christ, of which He is the head. As members of this body, we are called to seek unity, accepting, forgiving and loving one another as God forgives us. The local church is a congregation of believers who gather for worship, prayer, instruction, encouragement, mutual accountability and community with one other. Through the church, believers invest time, energy and resources in striving to fulfill the Great Commission – reaching out to lost people and helping them grow into devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

Baptism & Communion

We believe that two ordinances have been given by Christ to be observed by His Church. First, the baptism in water of all believers by which we show allegiance and obedience to Jesus Christ. Second, regular worship in Communion or the Lord’s Supper, in which we remember Christ’s sacrifice for our sin and partake of Him – the Bread of life – until He returns.

Matt 28:19-20 | 1 Cor 12:12-14 | Rom 6:3-4 | Luke 22:19-20 | John 6:35 | 1 Cor 11:23-36

The Resurrection

We believe in the glorious, personal and bodily return of our Lord Jesus Christ with his holy angels, when He will exercise His role as final judge over humanity. We believe in the physical resurrection of every person to stand judgment before God, either to the resurrection of eternal life with God or to the second death and eternal separation from God.

John 3:16-21 | Rom 6:23 | 2 Cor 5:10 | Heb 9:27 | 1 Cor 15:20-24 | Rev 20:11-15

The Bible

We believe the Bible represents God’s unique and authoritative revelation to all people, written through human authors under the supernatural guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. As originally given, it is the infallible and trustworthy Word of God.

Ps 119:105; 160 | Ps 12:6 | Prov 30:5-6 | 2 Tim 3:16-17 | 2 Pet 1:20-21

We also affirm the historic creeds of the orthodox Christian faith such as the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds.
